COURSES & OTHER SERVICES

This Business Called Songwriting - Complete Course

20 sessions - 3 hrs/ session. Total of 60 Hrs. Plus 6 Hrs in a reputable recording studio. (Optional)

Our songwriting course is made up of two core studies, Songwriting and the Songwriters Business. This is a full Songwriting Course (highly recommended) studied in 20 sessions.

Students studying the complete course will benefit a lot more if they intend to market their songs. The two core studies complement each other in a way that your knowledge of the business will instigate a better motivation in you to write great and powerful songs. After you have written and produced great songs, you would not want to see them sit on the shelf, but get them heard by music industry professionals. They have 'chemistry', a science of attraction between them, and when you have learned to understand that science, it will become second nature to you. This is what this 'compleat' course will do for you if you have attended all classes, successfully done all assignments and carefully taken on board all that you have learned.

Course Fee: $800.00  ($700 if you choose to pay upfront) (See options and details below.)

Opportunities included with this fee:

  • All the tools and techniques of songwriting as well as understanding everything a songwriter should know about the songwriting business.

  • Collaboration team to continue working together after the course.

  • Competing to be the winner of an award when offered next.

  • If song has reached the marketable level expected, which is expected of all students, publishing opportunities for your song written during the course will be presented to you on an award evening before industry professionals and the media.

  • Please note:

  • There's no song required at the end of the course for publishing opportunities. However the student interested in having a song published may present his/her song written during the course which has been recorded elsewhere. But the student should be aware of the level of finished demo which is required for publishing. Song must have been written step by step through the course and assessed on assessment sessions.

  • Songwriter's camp when available.

Course Fee Option: $1200.00   ($1100 if you choose to pay upfront)

The month following the completion of the course is the time allocated for your song to be recorded in studio. If your song is late, passed the allocated time, you will lose your studio time and to have your song recorded will be in a different studio of your choice and at your own cost. TAX DEDUCTIBLE

Did you know that tax principles that applies to most businesses are actually different for music related business such as performers, songwriters and musicians? Musicians and artists do not always easily make a profit unless it's been their big break, they are likely to make a loss. Therefore as long as they can justify their intention to make a living from their music, they are allowed to claim for losses every year, until they have made a profit or become successful.  Due to this course being geared towards establishing you as a professional songwriter, whether as your primary or secondary source of income if you have another full time job,  for tax purposes, this course is actually the proof that it is your intention to make a living with your music as a songwriter. So you can fully claim on your expenses in doing this course. In other words you have nothing to lose.  Speak to your accountant or a tax agent about it if you want to understand how this could work for you.

OTHER SERVICES

1 on 1 Song Critique

We do private critique of songs. We take the song break it down down and rebuild it the marketable way. You will be given ideas to play with to make your song the best it could be. Depending on its needs we can break down the structures, the verse-chorus-bridge components, the non-symmetrical lines, the rhyming, the meaning and/or content of the lyric, the prosody, the melody and rhythm in details, looking at it all in a marketable perspective. What you learn is the formula that works the best for that song and you should be able to apply the formula to new songs you write of the same type.

Note: It is important that you request critique on songs that you need help with, not on songs that you have already spent money on recordings, that you are attached to and will never change it in the end. We are here to help you get the best out of your songs.

Rate: $35 for 30 minutes.

Note: 30 minutes might be all you need and an extra 15 minutes bonus can given to you. However if your song needs more work to be done, extra $30 /30minutes will apply.

Online live & Phone Critique

Critiques can be also done online using the phone and computer together. We recommend a program such as Skype so fixing can be done in real time. We look at your song the same way as described above.

Rate: $35 for 30 minutes.

Note: 30 minutes might be all you need and an extra 15 minutes bonus can be given you. However if your song requires more work to be done, extra $30 /30minutes will apply.

Emailed Critique

Emailed critique is also available however at a higher rate because there is no interaction with the songwriter and therefore it can take, longer to make the song work to the satisfaction of the writer.  See the fees section on this page.

Rate: $50 initial fee for 30 minutes. Note: 30 minutes might be all that is needed to fix your song. However if your song needs more fixing, an extra $30 /30minutes will apply. You will be notified by email before we continue on your song after the first 30 minutes.

Melbourne Songwriter's Workshops

We run a monthly workshop for our past students and new comers as well.  Each month we have one of three ways of running the workshops.

  • A free forum session where each participant gives their opinion on each other's song. A rating sheet is handed to each writer for their song by everyone so each writer can assess for him/herself at home.

  • A very affordable rate critique for 45 minutes maximum on each song in development similar to 1 on 1 critique described above but at a cheaper rate, except that it is done on a screen before others so that they also learn from other's songs too.

  • A very affordable session where songwriters come to collaborate on songs with all the guidance they need.

Rate: A Free Workshop or a $10 rate for 45 minutes the following month. Note:  This is a reduced rate to that of 1 on 1 Critique and songwriters can take advantage of this opportunity.

We run a meetup website where members receive regular information about our workshops. If you are interested in attending our workshops, we recommend you joining the free at Melbourne Songwriters Workshop  meetup site.

  • Our seminar is a general presentation of what connects songwriters to the music industry, how understanding the business side of songwriting can make a difference in the way songs are written.

  • Critique of songs in a group setting and/or one on one where the songwriter is not only told what isn't working in a song, but shown how to make it work, or make it work for the songwriter.
